FS#1836 - hybdr is completely dark
Since the 4.01 update, the forest north to hydlaa (hybdr map) is completely black, you can only see characters. Replacing the file art/world/hybdr.zip with the version shipped with the 4.00 client removed the problem.
At time of reporting this bug, the most recent version of hybdr.zip was the only version exposing this behavior.
Update: this seems still the case with latest testing art.
Last info for reproducing:
at game time 1 am: logged in in bdroad01 - completely dark. And the road outside Hydlaa too.

Lighting seems OK now, remaining things
are part of other bugs (skybox and
sequence trigger stuff)
Let me repeat the problem occurs in the most recent version of the map. I DID run the updater, and the problem occured AFTERWARDS.
Re-opened to give cami a chance to explain if he did run the updater AGAIN and the problem still occurs.

The problem might only occur at certain ingame times. Is there a way to simulate a different ingame time to verify that?
Confirming. Recently when I walked with another char from Hydlaa to the Magic Shop (I logged in in Hydlaa), we saw that the forest junction was completely without light sources, just a flat unlit texture.
When I later returned with another char (logged in in Gugrontid), the forest was lit as usual, with several single light sources.
had the same problem on a windows machine
Is this related to the first city being 'unusually' dark at certain times (are shadows baked in as textures?
Same problem, i got lots of screenshot to proove it
Server: EZPCUSA (but as the same local lighting and map files are used, shoudn't matter)
Server daytime: 4 p.m.
Forest junction is correctly lit logging in in Gugrontid.
Forest junction is correctly lit logging in in the Magic Shop.
Forest junction is correctly lit logging in in Hydlaa (near Boralis).
Forest junction is correctly lit logging in in Kada-El's.
Ligh, does this mean the problem is gone? And more important is, if it is gone with the latest art on trunk. If so, please close.
Not exactly … I / we will have to test the same during more different server times. And if the lighting is only server time dependent, chances are high that only the lighting XML file is too … pessimistically set up. ;)
OK, try to corner weltall, so he can set the time off the server :). Or try to get a local server running so you can test it :)
A quick test on trunk (but with stable art) showed it nicely lit - so it was not too dark this single time I tried.

I often find this the case. Sometimes increasing and decreasing the "brightness level" option will eventually improve it, but not predictably. Usually the light flickers to the correct level for a second after I adjust the brightness and then returns to darkness (except for characters). If I play around enough it will eventually stick, apparently at random. The shadows are still pitch black, however. This is particularly a problem entering the forest going towards the magic shop and bd road. I often have to turn the gamma on my machine up to about 3.5 just to see anything at all there.
Version info for the bug drive:
graphics card: Radeon 9200 SE
motherboard: Gigabyte 8IPE1000
cpu: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Ubuntu Studio 9.04 Linux 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP
OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 8x x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.4
Logged in in the arena. Ran to bdroad01 (Nyshyn) and back. Passed the forest around 1 a.m. – It was unlit.
Once again, passing the forest around 1 a.m. (logged in in bdroad01) - completely dark. And the road outside Hydlaa too.
I logged into bdroad1 when it was 1am and moved to hybdr, but the level was lit (with dim light). The lights in that level are identical from 1 am to 3 am. then it changes at 4am when the ambient light is about doubled (but still dim). I cannot reproduce it.
I made a number of changes to this level, including:
- adding a minimum ambient light of 0.1
- adding the crystal lights on both sectors, so this should now be more consistent with the connecting levels (magicshop, hydlaa, ojaroad)
- fixed the trasparency issue of the top tree leaves, so you can see the sky now.
Will be available in updater soon.
I suggest Ligh tests this one, as he noticed it best.
Trunk version 0.5.53 (6th Sept. 2009):
The road between Hydlaa and the forest (on hydpaa_plaza) seems to be in deep shadow all day. It is not completely black now (in-game time: 2 p.m.), but I would expect the crystal to shine on it - which it doesn't.
1 a.m.: The forest is dark. Well, it is night … and the only places where the forest is lit, are the portals where sectors meet. Unfortunately, even in the middle of the forest. Lighter2 seems to assume that the tree leaves are solid opaque.
4 a.m.: The forest slowly gets brighter, but it is just an ambient brightness. The road to the forest on hydlaa_plaza is still dark. The distant forest patch, the single tree in front of the gate and the wadi are the only places with any sunshine outside Hydlaa.
Setting back to assigned as this apparently is not fixed.
Ligh, can you check again with latest maps, and hopefully close this?
The lighting seems better now, it's not dark there. However, the skybox is completely messed up and blurred. It's the HoM effect again. I'm pretty sure it's caused by the transparency on the top leaves, since the skybox looks normal on the places where the leaves-roof ends.
Ok, closing this one, as the HoM effect on the sky is part of the skybox bug.
